Week Begining- 18/11/19

On Tuesday we finished some blocking for 'You're the one that I want' by adding bits where Rowan (the new Sandy) pushes me downstage left to show here new found confidence and dominating nature and then we repeated the complicated foot choreography used earlier in the dance because when slick this looks really good. That night as a cast we did an unsupervised rehearsal where to start we decided to do a speed line run to see where everyone was at with lines as we should be pretty confident on all lines by now especially for the scenes that have been blocked for months now. Unfortunately, this was not the case as there was still a number of people stumbling over all of their lines and certain sections that were unbelievably slow and sticky - because of this, focus was lost and it became very unprofessional so we decided we needed to get up on our feet and start running through all choreography we had already learnt. whilst there were some moments that didn't look slick, this part of the rehearsal was really good as the cast were working together to teach each other parts of choreo that some were more comfortable with than others. |Personally, I focused a lot on Born to Hand-Jive and High School Hop as these were the 2 songs that included the most amount of Jazz technique and I wanted to make sure I was still working towards my target of improving my Jazz technique.
On Wednesday I did a few read throughs without my script to make sure I fully knew my lines with Harry testing me to make sure i knew them. The only scene I messed up on today was the drive-in movie scene and i think it is because the lines are very similar and i wasn't getting them in the right order. However, Rowan and I went through it a few times together so that we could start to know which lines went with which movement, making it easier to learn as we were both struggling with this scene. In the afternoon I continued to learn a little bit more of 'You're the one that I want' with Rowan, however Miss Welsh (our choreographer) was focused more on the rest of the cast so we just went through what we knew so far a few times. We recapped that Rowan stood in front of meand sway right and left as I do the opposite. We then both slide in opposite directions, stamping our feet and crossing our arms to our chests as we do. Then we turn and shimmy to me and back to Rowan which we included as it's the signature move in the original film and so it creates that feeling of nostalgia for the audience. Then we hit our right feet together, then left then cross our arms in front of us so our hands link together, and she spins so that I can hug her from behind.
On Thursday me and Rowan decided to focus on Act 2 Scene 3, The Drive In Movie Scene, as this was the stickiest of our lines and also the scene Rowan was least confident with her blocking. This scene relies a lot on my blocking for Sandy's reactions to work and so it is vital I am comfortable with these moves. Furthermore, this scene has plenty of opportunity for non-verbal communication to create comedic and sleezy moments, so I wanted to work hard on this scene to continue to work on my target. It is also probably one of the most awkward scenes as it involved a lot of contact, intimacy, and the kiss; whilst this was fine for me and Taylor because we had had a long time to build this relationship, Rowan is very new to the part and we have to force this relationship for now so it can become awkward. |However, it is important we get rid of any awkwardness to make it look the best and most realistic it can and so we need to rehearse it a lot so that it becomes more natural. Once we had gone through the scene in detail we ran through the scene numerous times. Any time we got the stage directions or a line wrong Taylor ( who was helping as she knew the blocking well) would stop us and give us corrections so that we were able to improve our character and small details we were getting wrong. Overall, I think this was a successful rehearsal as we were able to clean details and outline any problems they were facing as actors that we could adjust to make the scene easier for us both.
On Friday we finished blocking Summer Nights adding in the ending where the music softens as Danny opens up about thinking about Sandy in a more gentle way than before and so he leaves the T-Birds to go centre stage back to back with Danny and stares out into the distance as if he is reflecting on their time together. Once we finished blocking the dance we started to run through the dance adding singing all the way through and trying to use the bleachers too.
